To drop an item from your inventory and present it before them, head into your inventory and press triangle.
One of these characters is the kodama, which comes in green and purple variants. It will reward you with extra loot and exp for a reward. Your natural reaction may be to whip out your weapon and slay it, or try and use your ki to purify it, but nothing will work. The guy above will still be shooting at you, so make sure to hug the right wall if needed or hide only attack those and nothing else.
